Vietnamese Shrimp Spring Rolls Recipe +Giveaway

Last weekend our neighbors invited us over for a dinner party. We spent the evening enjoying the food and the company of a few neighboring families. It was good fun. We got to learn more about the people we have lived next door to for years!

The family that hosted the dinner are from Vietnam and they treated us by cooking traditional foods from their culture. We tried many new dishes including pho and Vietnamese spring rolls! The food kept coming and coming all night! They were very accommodating and we definitely did not leave hungry!

A couple of the dishes served had shrimp in it. I got a new perspective of ways to include shrimp in meals. One of my new favorite ways to prepare shrimp is by making Vietnamese spring rolls. They are fresh, quick and easy to prepare!

Vietnamese Spring Rolls

Recipe for Spring Rolls Dipping Sauce

Ingredients

• 2 garlic cloves, minced
• 1 jalapeno, minced
• 1/2 cup lime juice
• 3 tablespoons sugar
• 2 tablespoons fish sauce
• 1 tablespoon rice vinegar

Directions

Mash minced garlic and minced jalapeo together with mortar and pestle. Mix in sugar. Then mix in fish sauce, lime juice and vinegar. Let stand for at least 30 minutes.

Recipe for rice paper rolls

Ingredients

• 8 oz. of Gortons Classic Grilled Shrimp
• 1/2 cucumber, (matchstick-size strips)
• 1 cup carrot, (matchstick-size strips or grated)
• 1 cups bean sprouts
• 1 cup fresh mint leaves
• 1 cup fresh cilantro leaves
• 1 cup fresh basil leaves
• 6 lettuce leaves, romaine or iceberg, (shredded)
• 10-12 (8-9 inch rounds) rice paper sheets

Directions

Cook shrimp as directed on Gortons box and cut the shrimp in half. Set aside. Wet rice paper to soften. Layer on the lettuce, herbs, sprouts, cucumbers, carrots in a line on the rice paper leaving 1 inch borders on each end . Then top it off with the halved shrimp pieces. Fold in the ends and roll it up in a tight cylinder. Repeat with remaining paper, cut each diagonally and arrange on platter with dipping sauce!

Total Preparation Time: 30 min.
Serving: Approx. 12 rolls

Notes: Yum! The ingredients of mint, basil, cilantro, spicy chives, cucumber, carrot, lettuce, bean sprouts, and shrimp so fresh! These spring roll were so different than all of the other (typically fried) spring rolls Ive had. It is great for lunches or snacks. You can choose to eat it with the dipping sauce or not!

This recipe can be made using one of my favorite pre-cooked shrimp, Gortons Classic Grilled shrimp! Gortons shrimp is tender, delicious and best of all you dont need to take off the head or anything! Its pre cooked too! Gortons shrimp comes in a number of different varieties including breaded, sauted, etc. I have tired them all, but prefer the plain shrimp for adding to meals such as soups, spring rolls and pasta dishes. Oh, and I should mention they are only 110 calories and 3g of fat!

Skin Rejuvenation Cleaning Brush from Toilet Tree

I dont know about you, but sometimes I am overwhelmed by the number of skin-clearing products on the market. There isnt a day that goes by that I dont hear some celebrity on television, read about some chemical online or in a magazine, or just have a conversation with someone about how/what they are doing to clear their skin currently. This wasnt the first time I had heard about how important it is to remove dead skin cells from your face for a cleaner and clearer look. Id heard it time and time again from the spa esthetician and the dermatologist too. But I never could fathom spending a hundred dollars (or more) for the machine. Well, when I saw that there was a product from Toilet Tree that was essentially the same idea and concept a machine that spun and removed dead skin cells, and was only $32.95, I couldnt resist trying it. The price is reasonable, and if this product really worked, it would be a product I would gladly recommend.
Tested and Approved

The Professional Skincare System gives you the spa feel, at an do-it-yourself home price! The machine works by a quickly spinning attachment head and literally brushes and polishes away dead skin. It exfoliates and then rejuvenates. An added benefit to your skin being cleared away of pore-clogging dead skin is that your face will be soft as ever!

After using this product for a couple weeks, I decided a few things. The system is well made, inexpensive and has all the pieces necessary for improving my skin. BUT I needed to be patient. It took around a week to notice any difference. While my skin felt soft after using it just once, I didnt realize any appearance change for a few days after that.

A Beginners Guide To Waistcoats

Though they have been around for centuries, their application for most men is tricky. Though the weathered waistcoat wearer will of course know his Edwardian waistcoat from his Victorian, the complex world of waistcoat fashion can lead even the most stylish of fellows astray.

But where do waistcoats come from?

Interestingly, waistcoats are one of very few items of clothing that we are able to pinpoint exactly in history. In 1666 on the 7th of October, Samuel Pepys the diarist for King Charles II wrote that:

The king hath yesterday in council declared his resolution of setting a fashion for clothes which he will never alter. It will be a vest, I know not well how.

These two sentences therefore laid in ink the birth of the waistcoat and signaled the beginning of a clothing item that would last and continue into the 21st century.

But how do you go about wearing a waistcoat?

Propelled perhaps by the stylish looks of Donald Draper of Mad Men, the look of the waistcoat has found itself yet again amongst the shoulders of the young and if worn correctly, it can turn a scruffy rogue into a dazzling prince. The first thing to get right however, is the fit.

FIT

Getting this right is important, and you must remember that your waistcoat must exceed the height of your belt line; thus the meaning and origin of the term, waistcoat.

Another important thing in regards to fitting is to make sure that your arms have room to breathe; tight arm holes will only course your shirt to rise up when you raise your arms aloft.

Remember also, that a proper waistcoat wearer shall always keep his bottom button left open. What happens at the top however, is really up to him.

STYLE

Similar to most things in life, simple works every time and the same can be easily said for the ethos of the waistcoat. Investing in a neutral tone for your waistcoat shall also help you ease into the sophisticated world of the coat; greys, blacks and navy colors all work wonderfully well to start with.

Aloof and bright colors should come along later, when your knowledge and confidence expands.

Another thing that most people dont realize however is that waistcoats can be worn at any time of the year and with this, the material can change too.

This Christmas I wish for a Pinterest Looking Home

Have you ever gotten lost in a Pinterest home daydream? Where you found yourself on Pinterest for maybe a little too long pinning home dcor, home remodeling ideas or beautiful looking rooms designed with porcelain, ceramic, stone, tile, wood and laminate?

I sure have! It is not uncommon for me to get lost in one of these Pinterest daydreams. Pinterest has an endless selection of pictures to keep my dreams going on and on. I love pinning boards of beautiful homes, weddings, events and more. Here are some examples from my Pinterest home board:

I love dreaming of beautiful homes and exquisite remodel jobs. Someday I know I will have the home of my dreams, but until then, my husband and I can do small DIY home remodels like finishing our deck and setting up a mini home theatre in our basement. We did both this year, and they have proven to be rewarding and made a huge difference in the feel of our home.

As you are probably aware, I am a wise spender, but I also take pride in a job well done. I feel there are many ways to do a good job on a remodel, without breaking the bank. For instance having experienced friends and family help you with a remodel job. I bet you could make a list of people who are handy, have done a similar remodels or even work in the particular industry. Talk to them about helping out with your home project. They might be willing to work at a very discounted rate. Also you can find good help on Craigslist just ask for recommendations of their previous work first. These folks might just be in-between jobs or recently laid off. You might find someone with a excellent resume and lots of experience! This will save you time and money, and you wont have to learn how to do it all on your own.

Beyond finding different avenues of help (friends, family, Craigslist) with your remodel, you should also look for discounted materials, closeout products and off-brand names. HRST Books and the author Lauren Rennells have done an incredible job in producing these books. They have a range of educational and informative information about hair and makeup of the 1920s-1960s, and display the resources in a organized and colorful format. These book have remarkable photographs and illustrations I could browse the pictures forever! The full color pages of this book are very pleasing to the eye. I love the guides and find them incredible easy to understand and follow.

These books would be great for those in theatrical productions, for Halloween party costumes, cosmetologists, or if you are just interested in the beauty of the vintage times. For me, while I dont plan on dressing in vintage outfits anytime soon, I just simply enjoy this book for its lovely pictures and entertainment factor.

Proper Ways to Drink TeaFrom Tetley Tea

A couple of years ago my husband and I visited some friends and took holiday in Ireland. It was a magical trip of exploring small towns, the countryside, and the big city too. We ate, drank and enjoyed like the Irish. While we were there we tested famous Irish drinks like Jameson whiskey, Guinness, Kilkenny, Baileys Irish Cream, Mead liquor and Irish coffee.

But when we didnt have a pint glass in hand, we had a tea cup. Now, this was new to me. The Irish drank tea after every meal, during the meal, and then even in-between meals. And since we were doing as the Irish did, I thought I would join them. I wasnt a tea drinker before the trip, but Ireland got me hooked.

When we got home from our trip, I craved tea after dinner. All of the sudden I was checking out a whole new section on the grocery isle I had never bought tea before! Now I have about 6 boxes in the cabinet, from fruity teas, chai, black, caffeinated and non caffeinated teas. Some I enjoy without any additions, while others I like to add milk, honey or sugar to!

The latest tea that I have tried is Tetley tea. The British Blend (just dont tell my Irish friends) is one of the few sold in the United States, along with Black Tea and Green Tea. The tea is simple and soothing for an after dinner tea beverage, or just for a sippable warm treat during the day, especially as the days get colder! It is a rich and robust tea, with some caffeine to give me a little pick me up. The tea leaves are from some of the worlds finest from Africa and India. I like to enjoy this tea with a little sugar and milk.

But was I drinking it correctly? Did you know that there are classic methods of drinking tea? Like if the sugar or milk go first? So if you want to be more proper about your tea here are some tips:

• Rather than stirring, the correct way to incorporate milk is to place the teaspoon in the 6 Oclock position in the cup and gently fold the milk from 6 Oclock to 12 Oclock
• Never leave the spoon in, remove it and set it on a plate or napkin
• Milk, rather than cream is preferred, so it doesnt overpower the flavor of the tea
• Some may add milk before, but adding it after the tea is poured ensures the right amount is added
• Sugar should be added after milk- 1-2 teaspoons is the standard amount
• Although a practice of many, it is not correct etiquette to wrap the string of the tea bag around the spoon and squeeze, but rather, it should be removed and set aside
• Black tea and black-based tea blends are typically the only ones served with milk
• 
  Though most tea today is drank from mugs, if using a traditional tea cup, you should never loop your finger through the handle, but rather grasp it with your thumb and first two fingers. Holding the pinkie up help balance the cup to avoid spills
• Though tea traditions date back hundreds of years, the fact that it provides and rewarding and beneficial experience hasnt changed and Tetley, the tea preferred by more British households, brings the classic flavors and rich blends to the US

Yogurtland Masterpiece Contest + Get a FREE 3-ounces Yogurt

Are you creative, artistic and imaginative? Thats wonderful and all, but you dont have to be to enter this Masterpiece Contest. From the most stylish to the sloppiest every masterpiece is welcome to enter this fun contest from Yogurtland. Good thing, because I dont consider myself talented in any sort of art but this one sounds right up my alley!

ABOUT THE CONTEST:

Yogurtland guests are invited to photograph and name their favorite yogurt creation and submit it to the My Masterpiece website and Yougurtland Facebook page. At the end of submissions, each entrant will receive a link to their Masterpiece submission and can invite their friends to vote for the top creations.

Voting for the top masterpiece creations takes place from Oct. 29 Nov. 2. The top 100 entries will be judged by a panel of Yogurtland judges based on taste, name and recipe of the Masterpiece, creativity of the recipe and the ability to easily recreate the Masterpiece in Yogurtland stores.

ABOUT THE PRIZES:

The first place winner will receive a $500 Yogurtland gift card for a year of free yogurt, second place will receive a $250 gift card for six months of free yogurt, and third place will receive a $125 gift card for three months of free yogurt. The top three winners will also receive gift cards to reward their friends for voting for their entry. ALSO each Yogurtland store is encouraged to choose a local winner who will receive a $100 Yogurtland gift card. AND everyone is a winner because all entrants will receive a coupon to receive their first 3-ounces yogurt free!

Just how dirty are flight attendants?

Oh, and all the people grime I have at least rubbed elbows with 10 passengers as I try to shimmy down the narrow aisle. I brush up again the dirty plane too. Then after the gross day, I am so exhausted by the time I reach the hotel, I just throw my clothes on the hotel bed or floor. Is that dirty enough for you?

So hopefully I have painted an image of my incredible grimy, gross work uniform and my exceptional need for a good laundry detergent. Now the question remains, is Purex plus Oxi powerful enough?

UPS Man Will ID You California Wine Club

Tonight I had to show my ID to the UPS man.

No, our town is not saving money on police officers by splitting the jobs with the package delivery people. It is just what happens to you when you get wine shipped to your house, right to your door!

But this was a first for me. When I was asked to show ID, I honestly didnt know if I should show him or not. Was this a weird way of hitting on me? A new way to verify they are delivering to the right house? Its my house sir, I answered the door didnt I? Believe me, I am not lounging around someone elses house in my sweatpants.

Oh, right then it dawned on me, of course! It was because I was expecting my first shipment of the California Wine Club wines! I then quickly grabbed my ID, took the package out of his hand (with the utmost excitement) and ran for a box cutter to open up the box of world renown wines.

California Wine Club

For my very first shipment ever, I enjoyed two wines that I had never tried before. One was a red blend called a Tempranillo and the other a Sauvignon Blanc. Both were from the same winery, The Robelo Family Winery. This winery was new to me and I loved trying it out for the first time! The wines are from California and the story began in 1968 with Reynaldo, a Mexican migrant vineyard worker who now has his own winery and is living the American dream.

We enjoyed our glasses of wine over some superb home cooked meals. The white wine was light and refreshing while the red was full of cranberry, blackberry, cinnamon and spice aromas. It was flavorful and strong. We prefer red wine, but we were pleasantly surprised by the delicious crisp flavors of this white.

My Conclusion

It is such a great idea having wine delivered right to your door. It saves a trip to the grocery or liquor store (depending on where you live) and allows to you try new wines that you may have never heard of before. With the California Wine club you get the Uncorked magazine plus your 2 wines a month with the Premier Club membership ($49.95 +sh). The convenience of the process is worth the membership.

Now that the UPS IDing me mystery is solved, it is proven, there isnt anything better than opening your door to a home delivery of wines. No liquor store. No lines. Just immediate wine at the door and in my hand!
